Alicia & Ben » Blog

I haven’t updated in a while so this is going to be a lengthy catch up about the last two months.  This blog post may be a little disorganized but I’m just going to go with it. You should too!

Last week Jax was in a school play.  He was the elephant in the circus.  It was pretty adorable.  He loves to perform!

The day before we went on a little outing with his school friends.  He only has 7 children in his class (they started with 6 but added one a few months ago).  They’ve all become great friends.  I think he’ll be devastated this summer when he’s not with them on a daily basis.  It’s quite a diverse class, too.  Three of the seven didn’t speak English at the start of the year.  As it happens his teacher is trilgual speaking English, French, and German.  Too bad her three non-English speakers spoke Spanish, Portuguese, and some Indian dialect. 🙂

Ben worked a half day one Friday and we went to Orlando to visit the temple and Downtown Disney.  Kimmy joined us.  It was a fun afternoon/evening.  We learned the hard way that the kids are still terrified of the T-Rex Cafe.  :/  We had a pretty great time, nonetheless!

Took a few headshots of Jax in a parking garage while we were waiting for Ben:

Wendy, the triplets, and Aunt Judy came to town.  We visited in the afternoon and went to Lake Seminole Park for a family get together in the evening.  It was a fun, beautiful evening.  I love Wendy!  She’s like an older sister.  We had a fun visit.

Jax broke his arm.  Again.  He broke the right arm around this time last year.  This year he broke his left arm while jumping on the trampoline.  Ben and I were both present and it looked like nothing.  It was a small buckle fracture in his radius.  Sadie was super jealous that both McKay and Jax have broken bones and she never has.  So, Dr. Beck was fantastic and wrapped her arm, too 🙂  Cast on  pictures….. (I think the first one looks like he’s praying.  He wasn’t I think he had just blinked)

A group of friends went stand up paddleboarding one weekday.  Sarah was sweet enough to watch McKay and the other two kids were in school.  We went to a place off Honeymoon Island (Caladesi Island, I think).  It was surprisingly easy and we had a ton of fun.

DSC_0441 DSC_0485 DSC_0480We did our yearly strawberry picking with Kimmy and my mom. They were super helpful.  I always forget what an exhausting experience it is.  It starts out fun at 9am but when we’re still making jam at 9pm…..not so fun!  I think we picked like 56 quarts this year and we made a ton of jam.  I didn’t keep all of them but my cut was 60 jars!  We fly through that stuff.  We use it on toast, pancakes, crepes, waffles, and stirred into yogurt. The kids were pretty helpful and always enjoy the experience.  McKay ate berries all day long!  Other than breakfast it was pretty much all he ate.  Even at night he still was eating the washed ones out of our bowls and begging for more. Wow!

DSC_8834 DSC_8860 DSC_8874 DSC_8891 DSC_8897 DSC_8904

DSC_8968We signed the kids up for soccer which recently ended.  I think the kids enjoyed it.  McKay definitely did.  Jax had a pretty rough group of kids but still had fun.  Sadie had fun once she got there but wasn’t always thrilled about going.  I’m not sure we’d do it again too soon but maybe I’ll sign the boys up again in a year or so.  McKay adored his “Coach Conner” and was super duper obedient and desperate to please.  It was adorable to watch.

A friend came to town, Heather Wiley (now Johnson), so we took the kids to the zoo one afternoon.  It was fantastic to visit and finally meet her cute kids!  We’ve loved having our zoo passes.  I upgraded so we could get two friends in for free and we’ve gone with quite a few friends. I’ve lost track of how many times we’ve gone…..maybe 10? The kids still get excited every time and we’re still finding new places to explore.

As a sidenote, we’ve loved having Kimmy home the last 4 months.  She’s about to finish up her extended vacation and go back to Utah to try to find a real job.  We’ve been all over together – beach, racquetball, stand up paddleboarding (seen above), Orlando (seen above), yard work, strawberry picking (above), YMCA swim classes, Ellenton shopping, and she’s helped me with a few photo gigs.  We will be so so sad to see her go.  This was one of a few beach outings we’ve had with her:

Back in February the Cricchio’s came for a visit.  It was so, so, so fantastic to be back together.  The kids had a ball; it was like they had never been apart.  We sure wish they would move back 😉

The Haggards also visited around that time.  I didn’t take a ton of pictures but here are a few…..

We did family pictures since everyone was in town.  Candy worked wonders at getting smiles from the kids!

Shannon - The kids looked like they had the best time. I loved seeing their reactions to helping fly the kite. The picture at the end is just darling too. You know the kids had fun when they’re exhausted and tired at the end. By the way, Mckay is looking so much older and taller now. Cute kids!ReplyCancel

alicia - Thanks Shannon! I think the kids sprinted the whole hour and a half we were there. They were so exhausted by the end. Yes, McKay is growing! He is almost as tall as Jax. Hard to believe!ReplyCancel

On a random Tuesday towards the end of February I decided to carry my camera throughout the day and document our daily routines.

A day in the life of the Johnson family:

7:20 – alarm goes off.

7:30 – Ben gets up, wakes Sadie up, and starts to get her ready.  This morning she’s tired and isn’t thrilled about going to school.

7:32 – I get up, get ready, and get Sadie’s lunch and school stuff collected.  Sadie no longer likes cereal so I get her buttered gluten free toast ready for her to eat on the drive to school.

dayinthelife2

7:48 – Sadie and I leave for school.  It’s only a 5 minute drive.  I always adjust the seat, mirrors, turn on the defrost button, put on the seat warmer, and hit the CD button.  We always listen to Popcorn Bopping.  She loves #10 and I love #13.

We arrive at school, park, and I walk her in.  She doesn’t need me to but I enjoy those last few minutes together and the car line always takes longer.

dayinthelife3

8:05 – I arrive back home, we eat breakfast, Ben gets Jax ready, and then he showers and gets himself ready.  Ben always throws Jax his clothes from up high and Jax tries to catch them.

McKay has already found his “fastest clothes” and dressed himself.  He probably wore the same thing yesterday but he’s happy and they look clean so I’m good with it.

Jax finishes up some last minute homework.

I get his lunch and backpack ready, get his shoes on him, and comb his cute little head of hair.

Dayinthelife4 Dayinthelife5

8:30 – Ben and Jax leave for work/school.  Jax is excited and eager to go.

Dayinthelife6

8:32 – I work on some photography stuff – emails to catch up on, a session to edit, a blog post to write.  McKay sits on my lap the whole hour I work. He doesn’t always but he wants the computer to watch a show and isn’t interested in his toys.  I don’t get nearly enough done but at least it’s something.

Dayinthelife7

9:30 – I give McKay the computer so he can watch Monster Trucks and I do a morning pickup – sweep, morning dishes, and lay some laundry flat to dry since our dryer is broken

Dayinthelife810:30 – I force McKay to turn off his show.  He plays with legos while I shower.

Dayinthelife910:50 – McKay is upstairs asking for a “cereal snack” – he loves cereal and usually asks for breakfast twice every morning.  I think it’s junk food so we often fight over the quantity of cereal he consumes daily.  I give in to his cute face and pleading and get him his cereal.
Dayinthelife10

11: 10 – I try on a few outfits until I settle on one.  Then I blow my hair dry but I lose energy/interest half way and stop since I’m not really going anywhere or won’t see anyone anyways. I check on McKay who is done with breakfast and playing with his legos again.

Dayinthelife11

11:25 – I’m starving so I eat Ben’s leftover chinese food. I’m dead tired and know I’m going to need a nap.  I fight the urge to lay down for a few minutes because I know I’m going to need to get Jax soon. I’ve been so tired lately.  I take an iron supplement and mentally tell myself to take one again tomorrow.

DSC_5881

11:42 – Mckay and I leave to get Jax.  I listen to the Diane Rehms show on NPR which is usually pretty interesting.  Jax is excited to see us but his mood turns sour quickly – he sticks his tongue out, spills peanuts and yells at McKay.  Sometimes school makes him stressed and ornery and it takes him a few minutes to unwind after pick up.  We talk and he apologizes.

Dayinthelife13 Dayinthelife14

12:20 – We arrive home and Jax puts his backpack on his hook and they put their shoes on the shoeshelf.  They ask to watch a show and I agree since I’m exhausted.  I get them lunch and then lay down for a 45 minute nap.  I thank the heavens above that the kids are getting older and a nap is possible.

Dayinthelife15

2:00 – We leave to pick up Sadie.  I dislike the car line so I have her as walker except I drive and pick her up across the street from the school with the other walkers. I’m thrilled to see her!

Dayinthelife16

2:25 – We’re back home.  The kids work on the lego ship that’s still out while I get them a snack – peaches, blackberries, and popcorn.

Dayinthelife17

2:45 –  After some more snacks (apples and peanut butter) the kids beg for show.  I agree since I have a few calls to make. After the calls I reply to a few emails and check facebook and instagram.

Day in the life

3:45 –  I force the TV off, much whining ensues, and we head outside.  We usually spend a lot of the afternoon outdoors when the weather cooperates. On this day we walk to the park and then play with the bikes in the front yard when we get home.

Dayinthelife19

Dayinthelife20 Dayinthelife21 Dayinthelife22

6:15 – We go inside, I start dinner, the boys do puzzles, and Sadie does her reading homework on the computer.

Dayinthelife23

6:45 – Dinner is ready – lemon butter pasta with peas and bacon.  Not healthy but it is what it is.

Dayinthelife24

7:00 – McKay rinses the dishes which he doesn’t do too often but he loves so I always wonder why I don’t ask him to do it more.  Sadie and Jax work on homework which I need to help them with.  McKay is done with the dishes and done a pretty great job so I he picks up his legos.

Dayinthelife25

7:30 – Bathtime.

Dayinthelife26

DSC_6303

7:45 – We brush teeth, read books under Sadie’s bed, say prayers, and say goodnight.

Dayinthelife27

8:00 – I catch up on emails, facebook, and a few blogs I follow.

9:30 – A little TV time.  Can’t remember what I watched.

Dayinthelife28

10:15 – Ben arrives home.  It’s his busy season so he works late.  He watches the end of what I’m watching with me, we chat, and then we head to bed.

Dayinthelife29

And another day is done.

Shannon - What a good idea to record your daily activities. In the future it will be fun to look back and see what life was like when the kids were little. Great pictures too! I love all the different angles and colors. Miss you guys!ReplyCancel

Desiree - I might need a nap now too. 🙂 I enjoyed the whole day. Fun pictures and fun you. Hope Ben’s busy season gets over soon! That’s a yucky work day for him.ReplyCancel

I just downloaded the last 9 months of phone pictures onto my computer and thought I’d do a little collage.  I can’t believe how much the kids and our lives have changed in the last 9 months!  I don’t take my camera pictures too seriously – they’re just blurry snapshots taken during the hustle and bustle of life.  They aren’t correctly exposed, sharp, or artistically composed.  But, when they’re all pieced together it seems to create something beautiful.  It humbles me to see all the little moments gathered and reminds me how richly we’ve been blessed.

Desiree - Sorry just catching up on your blog. I love this one (not just cause I made it in a picture). Mostly because of the naked guy putting in your flooring. 🙂 Ya’ll have done a lot of fun things in 9 months and the kiddos are getting so big so fast.ReplyCancel
