Christmas Adam is a colloquialism for the day before Christmas Eve or December 23rd. It is a rather new term. An online slang dictionary created a listing for it only nine years ago.

Christmas Adam last year was a big hit so we continued the tradition this year.  A present, fondue dinner, Christmas movie, and sleeping around the Christmas tree.

This year was haphazardly thrown together.  My busy season was intensely busy this year.  I had 46 photo commitments in three months (Oct – Dec) so I was really scrambling to keep up in life during this time.  We’d had lots going on during the day and then yard people were at our house all afternoon/evening.  They could see into our front room while we were eating our main dinner (didn’t take any pictures) so we moved to the kitchen for privacy for dessert.  I was finally able to slow down at this point and enjoy the sweet treat.

The movie we choose was Home Alone.  Wow, did it stir up some questions and concerns!  Being home alone and left behind?  Terrifying to our kids.  Bad men breaking into the house?  “Are bad men real mommy?”  They were super scared to learn that bad men were real.  McKay said, “It’s okay Sadie.  There’s none in Florida!”  The pet tarantula, spooky old man, after shave…we were stopping to explain something and assuage a concern every 4 minutes.  I think it was a thrilling hit and the boys have been setting traps for bad men around our house ever since.

Oh, and in an effort to replicate the sled on the stairs scene the boys slid down Ethan stairs on a homemade sled (aka box lid for Jax and the whole box for McKay) and McKay nearly knocked out another tooth.  He, in fact, did knock it backwards and it’s still wiggly but the dentist thinks it will reattach.

Kids….wow.  I mean, WOW!

So, a busy but memorable day 🙂

The day before Christmas break each of the kids had performances or parties.  I thought I would share the pictures and a little school update.

McKay is absolutely loving preschool!  His school and teachers are a perfect fit for him – laid back, loving, playful, and not overly musical.  He wasn’t our most social child prior to this year but he was quick to make friends and seems to be quite outgoing, the leader of the pack even.  Several parents told me at the Christmas performance that their son or daughter often mentions McKay.  Who knew?  Kindergarden was really hard for both Sadie and Jax so we plan to have him repeat preschool since he’s an August birthday and small for his age.   He’s quite clever, though, so hopefully he won’t be bored next year.  Overall he’s happy and thriving!  He’s so cooperative, helpful, happy, obedient, great at sharing, loves to make people laugh, and excessively affectionate.  And he’s the most reverent child I’ve ever met.  I don’t think he has opened his eyes during a prayer once in the last three years.  My only concerns about him are his hatred for vegetables, his clumsiness which leads to injuries, and he cannot pronounce his Rs.

Sadie seems to like 2nd grade more than Kindergarten and 1st.  Academically, she’s always running to keep up with the other kids but I’ve seen a lot of growth in her this year.  She’s a great reader but struggles with writing. She makes friends, both boys and girls, so easily and there’s very little drama in her life.  So happy about that!  Previous school years she mostly played with the boys but this year there’s some really sweet girls in her class and they’ve all become good friends.  She’s been coming home saying more grown up things, “Mommy Ryden loves Ava….he told her today on the playground!”  Cute but a little shocking.  She loved her teacher, Ms. Colern, but she quit about a month ago.  She didn’t like all the changes that have happened in the schools and felt she couldn’t continue to teach because it was unfair what she’s forced to do to the kids. Meaning too many worksheets and testing and not enough of hands on learning and practical skills?  She was really a caring and quality person so it was sad to see her go.  After a few weeks of subs Sadie’s new teacher was just hired.  Sadie seems to like her, too.  Sadie likes everyone, though, so who knows?

Then there’s Jax.  Jax, Jax, Jax.  This child was the easiest, sweetest baby but year 3, 4, and 5 of his life have been hard!  He’s so smart and often overthinks and overreacts to situations.  Kindergarden has been brutal on him.  He cried on and off for the first 4 months.  The tears have finally stopped but it’s still a struggle.  “Mommy it’s so hard when the teachers yell so much”  “Mommy, John Avery and Braden wouldn’t play with me today.”  “Mommy I have to sit for so long and my legs are so wiggly.”  Oh, it’s brutal.  Brutal for me to hear he’s struggling, brutal for me to know what to do, and brutal for him to endure.  We’ve been seriously considering homeschooling him for the remainder of this school year.  He’s becoming anxious at home, clingy at church, and sour/moody in general.  I feel like his adorable little spark is dimming.  Yet, I feel like I shouldn’t rescue him from his problems but instead teach him how to cope which I’ve been trying to do.  Because of some negative things that happened the second week of school he wouldn’t play on the playground from Sepetember thru January.  He sat on a bench every day at recess for 5 months!  Towards the end of January he finally started playing again but he still comes home with complaints “John Avery threw sand on my head today and when I told the teacher he got mad and said he wouldn’t be my friend anymore.”  “Did the teacher do anything?”  “No she just told me to go back and play.”  Stuff like that.  Over and over.  He can be dramatic but it’s still hard to know he’s struggling.  There are several really sweet kids in his class so I think he just needs to learn who to choose as friends.  He’s been making lots of progress the last month so hopefully that will continue.  Good news: he’s academically great, he’s never been in trouble, and he’s making progress.  So that’s something.

My heart nearly burst in my chest watching Sadie in this performance!

A good friend of ours, Amy Clawson, teaches a Singers Company class at her home once a week.  This is a description from their website about the organization:

Singers Company is non-competitive opportunity for girls to perform, a fun way to inspire confidence, make friends and share joy through music & dance. With practices once a week and 2-3 performances at the end of each Singers Company season, these young girls develop talents and skills that last a lifetime. It is inspiring to see a young girl, once afraid to leave her mother’s side, get up in front a large audience and sing a solo with confidence! Singers Company provides a fun environment for young girls to sing, dance, make friends and rock out!

I’ve always wanted Sadie to join but scheduling wouldn’t work for us in our last home.  Luckily, we were able to work it out this year.  I love it!  Sadie loves it!  It’s a great fit for her – building confidence, non-competitive, music, dance….perfect!

She joined the group a month late and missed a few practices because of travel and my photography commitments so she didn’t know the moves perfectly but look how happy she is!  One of the things I love most about Sadie is how happy and blissfully unaware she is.  She’s never overly concerned about perfection or what others are doing or thinking of her.  She’s just happy and loves to have fun.  This group and teacher are the perfect fit!

My parents hosted Thanksgiving 2015.  I don’t think it’s a secret but it’s not my most favorite holiday.  Turkey, stuffing, gravy….not my type of food.  I do love visiting with family, though!

This year we set up the bounce house in the front yard and the kids jumped, climbed, and wrestled til they’d burned every last calorie consumed. They love that type of rough and tumble play with cousins.

After that my brothers and I took the kids on a little walk down to Bauder Elementary school to see if we could get into the playground.  The school was always open when we were growing up and it was the perfect little escape for us.  I have so many wonderful childhood memories in those fields and on the jungle gyms.  And lots of not good ones, too, actually. 🙂  It’s so sad that schools are locked up now.  Michael found a way to break-in so we spent a few nerve racking minutes on the playground before our consciences caught up with us.   It was fun while it lasted.  Mostly it was run to reminisce with my brothers.

I took a grand total of 12 pictures and they’re all horrible.  I’ll share anyways because the pictures, despite all their imperfections, bring back the memories for me.

This year we wanted to do our Utah trip in winter so the kids could see snow.  My cousin, Jessica, was getting married mid-November in Utah so we planned for our trip to be during that time.  Things worked out perfectly since we had some mild temperatures during the first few days and then a big snow drop half way through.

Seems like every trip we’re sick or get sick.  This was no different as Sadie and I were running fevers most of the week but we still had a nice time.  She was really low energy most afternoons….so sad!  But she was trooper, as always.

Highlights included playing in leaves, visiting Uncle Lane’s horse and music classroom, playing in the snow, playdates with Jadyn and Jace, dinner at Kurt and Des’ new house, Thanksgiving Point dinosaur museum, haircuts and lunch at Molly’s with Christy and Kimmy, and Jess and Brian’s wedding in Ogden!
