Cast Removal

On Wednesday we went to see Dr. Beck to have McKay’s cast taken off.  He was thrilled!  His language comprehension is really quite good and I had told him the day before what the plan was.  Every hour he kept lifting his cast and grunting to get it off.  He’d point to the door and grunt to get in the car and go to the doctor.  I kept having to tell him not yet, not yet, not yet.

Waiting in the lobby:

See those pistachio nuts in Sadie’s hand?  Well, turns out she’s allergic to pistachios and she spent the whole evening throwing up.  Sad for Sadie!

The machine was really, really loud and scared him to death.  It was a really quick process though.

The after x-ray:

When he first got it off he kept lifting his leg, and pointing and grunting at his cast.  They had taped it together and given it to us as a souvenir.  We said, “You want it back on?”  Head nod!  We told him we couldn’t put it back on.  He seemed okay with that and hasn’t touched the thing since.  I’ve shown it to him a few times since and he won’t even look at the thing.

He is really enjoying his new-found freedom.  He does walk strange – on his heel with his foot turned outward.  The doctor said that was totally normal and it would self correct in a week or so.  Let’s hope so 🙂
