Blueberry’s Near Death Experience

I was in the shower the other morning when Jax walked in crying and soaking wet.  I assumed he had tried to get water from the fridge and spilled it on himself in the process.  About a minute later McKay walked in soaking wet and crying.  This seemed strange to me.  I quickly dried off and begged Jax to calm down and tell me what happened.

“Moe spilled Blueberry water all over me!”

Blueberry is our pet fish:

I ran, and I mean RAN to the kitchen sink, filled the closest cup with water, and then ran to the dining room.  Sure enough, Blueberry’s water was tipped over and there was no Blueberry in sight.  After quite a bit of searching I finally found him on the tile a little ways off.  I gently scooped him up with book and placed him in the water.

He swam sideways at first and refused to eat.  I was pretty sure it was the end of the road for the little guy.  I’d be lying if I said I didn’t shed a tear or two for the trauma we put him through.

I asked McKay, “Did you do this?”  Very wide-eyed he gave me a big head nod.

“Moe, why did you do this?”  Hands up with palms towards ceiling and shoulders lifted he replied, “Uh?”  Translation: I don’t know.

“Moe you hurt Blueberry!”  I said to him.  He responded by blowing a kiss to the fish.  That’s how he says sorry when he does something wrong.

Then he hugged me around the leg and gave me a big, sweet smile.  What is a mother to do with such a child?

Luckily after about a half hour his swimming straightened out and he began eating.  It’s been a few days now and he seems to be just fine.

Blueberry now sits on top of the piano out of reach from little hands -where he should had been originally.  I’m trying to only shower when Ben is around but that’s not easy considering he’s working long hours.  Seems like even those 5 minutes of unsupervised time each day provide plenty of opportunity for McKay to find mischief.  I’m hoping both McKay and I (and Blueberry) survive his toddlerhood.  With a split lip, broken leg, and nearly dead fish it’s been a traumatic two months.
