Split Lip, Broken Heart

This is McKay:

This is McKay after he falls into the corner of the desk:

This is McKay after getting two stiches:

This is McKay’s answer after I ask him, “What happened?”:

This is McKay 24 hours after incident:

Instead of taking him to the ER I took him to Sarah’s (my sister-in-law) dad who happens to be a breast cancer surgeon. He once mentioned if any of our kids fall and need stitches to bring them over to his office. So I was weighing my options after his fall: 3 or more hours in an ER, huge hospital bill, unknowledgeable ER doctor who doesn’t sew his lip back together correctly, and risk picking up illness at hospital OR skilled perfectionist surgeon who has performed countless stitches, free, shorter wait, and germ free office. So, I felt bad inconveniencing him but I took him to Charles. He was F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C!

McKay, however, was not fantastic.  It took three of us to hold him down. One doctor held his head and face, I held his arms, and nurse Mary Kate held his legs. He was still thrashing around quite a bit even with all three of us trying to hold him still. Dr. Cox numbed his lip with something so he wouldn’t feel anything thereafter. McKay was going nuts and I said, “How in the world are you going to do this?” to Dr. Cox. He held steady, steady, steady, and then with one quick movement he got the first suture in. He did a second above his lip to relieve pressure. It was perfect! He cleaned him up and both docs looked at it and decided the first one needed to be redone because it was a little tighter than they wanted. I was so grateful he was a perfectionist! Again, I was really doubtful that it was possible to get that first stitch out but they made it look easy. Thankfully, McKay was starting to give up at this point. The other doctor also had the idea to put gauze over his eyes so he couldn’t see. That really did help! So, Dr. Cox stitched the lower area again and it was PERFECT! It couldn’t have been better!

McKay’s plump little lips are one of his best features and I had visions of him forever having a crooked smile after this incident. But, I don’t think that will be a problem. Everything is lined up perfectly, he’s eating great, sleeping great, and happy as can be. I have found I am paranoid about him or anyone falling now. If I said, “Be careful!” once today I bet I said it 200 times.  My heart can’t handle the stress of this crazy little boy!

Shannon - Oh poor Mckay! I hope he’s feeling better. How painful to have your lips stitched up. I’m glad you were able to get his cut fixed by someone who does their job so well. Sending hugs to Mckay!ReplyCancel
